New Mayor and Deputy Mayor for Todmorden

Todmorden Town Council is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Mayor Councillor Ruth Coleman-Taylor and Deputy Mayor Councillor The Revd Graham Kent.

The tradition of a formal “Mayor Making” ceremony held at the Town Hall is just not possible this year because of the current social distancing rules and therefore the ceremony has been postponed at the moment, pending  restrictions being lifted at some future time that enables gathering to take place.

Councillor Coleman-Taylor was elected to Stoodley Ward, Todmorden Town Council, in May 2019, having moved in 2005 to Todmorden to marry fellow long serving Town Councillor Mick Taylor. Between them, they have 6 children and (so far!) 6 grandchildren and are well known in the local community

Councillor Coleman-Taylor said “With the Covid-19 pandemic, we have all been learning about the value and importance of science to our lives. We all owe a great deal to the women and men who are researching the causes of disease, inventing new remedies and protection and finding solutions such as tests and vaccines to support our public health. My priority as Mayor, influenced by starting my  working life as a teacher of Maths and Sciences, will be to raise awareness among young people in education about the exciting and fulfilling opportunities for them in STEM careers: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics as we are going to need all these skills and talents to solve present-day problems such as Climate Change. I hope, in particular to encourage girls and young women to take up these opportunities.

This is going to be a very different Mayoral Year since it will be many months before we have the usual socials and celebrations. However, like everyone else, I have been learning how to Zoom and I will endeavour to take part in online events.”
