The restored Todmorden Bandstand made its grand debut last weekend, at the Bandstand Re-Launch in Centre Vale Park. The free event drew in a 2000-strong audience throughout the day, who were treated to an incredible line-up of local musical acts.

Todmorden Community Brass Band kicked the day off, performing nostalgic hits, a nod to the heritage and original use of the Bandstand. Calderdale Fantasy Orchestra, who brought the party with a mega mix of music from local stars, were joined by a number of special guests, including Tod’s very own John Helliwell, of Supertramp fame.

Next up was the Todmorden Nasheed Choir. The young choir had the crowd involved, a wonderful moment where the Todmorden community shone. This was followed by the Music for the Many youth orchestra, a group of incredibly talented youngsters! Vocal Highs gave an acapella masterclass, and the day was rounded off with Mr Wilson’s Second Liners, who had the crowd on their feet chanting “MORE”.

Feedback gathered from the day referenced how it had made people feel proud to be from Todmorden and a part of the community.

The event, put together by Todmorden Town Council and the voluntary Todmorden Bandstand Group, was a testament to the efforts of all involved and the culmination of years of dedication, passion and hard work, kickstarted by the “Save the Bandstand” campaign, which saw the structure achieve Grade II listed status in 2019.

It was then named as one of the Todmorden Town Deal projects, and in partnership with Todmorden Town Council, who secured further funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund (thanks to National Lottery Players), the restoration of the Bandstand to its former glory began.

Jim Duffy, Todmorden Bandstand Group Secretary and former Town Deal Board member said It was a brilliant day and the outcome of a lot of work over a number of years. It was really special to see the bandstand looking so beautiful, the great turnout, and everyone enjoying themselves so much. A day I won’t forget.”

Councillor Elizabeth Thorpe, Todmorden Town Council said “It was a wonderful day showcasing the amazing talent our town has to offer. From local legends like John Helliwell of Supertramp to young members of Music For The Many and the many local musicians and singers in Calderdale Fantasy Orchestra, there really was something for everyone and an amazing atmosphere.

I would like to thank all those who made it happen from the Save Our Bandstand Group to our funders, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Todmorden Town Deal. The Bandstand has a great heritage which Todmorden Town Council is proud to be able to support financially and protect for future generations. Here’s to many more events in our lovely Centre Vale Park.”

Todmorden Town Council and the Todmorden Bandstand Group look forward to working together to bring more events to the Bandstand. Visit the Todmorden Bandstand website to become a volunteer, sponsor a future community event, or hire the Bandstand.
