Todmorden Climate Assembly

The Climate Emergency Committee recently hosted a Climate Assembly at the Tod Learning Centre and Community Hub, inviting groups from across Todmorden and beyond for an inspiring and enjoyable evening. An impressive 32 people attended the assembly.

We listened to what each other are doing already, some struggling in some ways, others pressing on, all of us encouraged by each other’s specialised knowledge and commitment.

During the event, participants candidly discussed their endeavours, revealing their struggles and their successes, all drawing encouragement from the specialised knowledge and commitment of others. It was particularly notable that some of the organisations represented have been active for 20 years and are still going strong, and it was clear that new groups are coming through.

It became apparent that many were unaware of the full scope of activities undertaken by fellow groups in the area. Some were not fully acquainted with the Town Council and its Climate Emergency Plan. Through group activities, attendees uncovered opportunities for mutual support and identified areas where the Council could also support and facilitate.

Moving forward, the Climate Emergency Committee will assess the strengths and needs identified and recorded by each organisation in their group discussions and will assist in various capacities and facilitating community gatherings to address pertinent issues and disseminate information.

The assembly left attendees motivated to continue their collective endeavour to win hearts and minds in the fight for climate action. The Council will aim to foster partnerships among groups and facilitate the sharing of common resources and is committed to providing meaningful help and support as we learn more about the amazing initiatives already underway in Todmorden and Calderdale.
