The climate effect of growing trees is well known, as part of their growing process, they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the atmosphere, helping to remove pollution and improve overall air quality. Furthermore, trees are proven to help residents feel a stronger sense of community and being around green spaces helps reduce stress levels and improve mental health.
The Climate Emergency Committee also hopes this scheme will aid in reducing the effects of the cost-of-living crisis for residents, with these trees producing edible fruits, which can be expensive and wasteful when purchased in stores.
The scheme has run for the past 3 summers and the response has been phenomenal. Trees sourced from a local supplier have been delivered to residents and planted in all 6 of the Todmorden Wards. We hope the dwarf fruit trees will provide a plentiful bounty as they grow and mature in their new homes.
Take a look below, at some pictures of the trees at different stages of life, sent in by the people who have taken part in the scheme.
